Eligibility

EU261 covers any flight departing an EU or EEA airport, whatever the airline, and flights arriving in the EU or EEA on an EU-licensed carrier. You need a confirmed booking and to have checked in on time.

Amounts

  • €250 for flights up to 1,500 km.
  • €400 for 1,500–3,500 km and intra-EU flights over 1,500 km.
  • €600 for flights over 3,500 km outside the EU.

Per passenger, regardless of the fare.

Deadlines

It depends on the country: two years in Italy, three in Germany, five in Spain and France, six in the UK and Ireland. Old flights are often still claimable.

Common questions

Does a delayed flight always mean compensation?
No. You need three hours or more at your destination and a cause within the airline's control.
Can I claim if I was rebooked and arrived on time?
If you arrived less than three hours late, no compensation is due, though your other rights still applied.
Does accepting a voucher end my claim?
It can be treated as settlement. Decline vouchers in writing if you want the cash.
Do children get compensation?
Yes, if they had their own seat. Infants on a lap generally do not.
Is this legal advice?
No. What a flight! is an information and drafting tool, not a law firm.
